PATorganiser Driving State Government Electricity Provider’s Operational Assets

State Government Electricity Provider

Western Australia

Western Power is a Western Australian State Government owned corporation providing reliable electricity to residential and commercial customers throughout Western Australia.

An internal audit of five Western Power depots identified process inefficiencies relating to inspections, and testing and tagging of operational assets due to:

  • Lack of a management system
  • No streamlined processes
  • Manual workflows

This led to a human resource inefficiency, costing time, money and data integrity.

Business outcomes at a glance:

A number of key Risk Reduction results and Productivity Gains were achieved through the implementation and integration of PATorganiser into managing Western Power’s operational assets:

  • Asset risk management and adherence to Australian legislative and regulatory compliance
  • Advanced compliance reporting aligned to Australian test and tagging industry standard AS/NZS 3760
  • Streamlined asset compliance procedures and adherence to internal procurement and operational standards
  • Provide a single data repository across all Western Power sites for internal business functions
  • Consolidate various external contractor records and move ownership of data to Western Power
  • Enhance scheduling of asset inspections, improving employee productivity by 20-25%

The Solution:

To improve process effectiveness, management reporting and legislative compliance, it was recommended, based on the key findings of the audit, that Western Power should implement an online compliance register to consolidate all operational testing, tagging and inspection records.

PATorganiser was identified by the ICT planning and architecture team as the chosen single source of truth for inspection records.

New features: Bulk add asset and bulk test

We are pleased to announce two new features which will hopefully save you some time if you do any manual testing.

On the Organiser tab of PATorganiser, you are now able to add several assets at once. Just tick the “Add multiple” box on the Add Asset(s) dialog.

You can now also select several assets from the asset list and click the Test button to bulk test the selected assets in a single step.

PATorganiser Test and Tag Software is now compatible with the Fluke PAT testers.

Seaward Apollo Series – Apollo Plus – New Firmware

Seaward have released new firmware for their Apollo series.  The new firmware upgrades the 400/500/600 testers to the 400+/500+/600+.  In addition to data download via USB cable the upgraded devices now support saving to a USB stick, giving you extra flexibility.

PATorganiser is compatible with the new Apollo firmware.

Is It Worth Calibrating Your PAT Testing Machine?

Predominantly this is a question we don’t get asked very often at PATorganiser, but is one that should be aired.

However, most of the people we encounter at PATorganiser take calibration and having correct operational Test and Tag testing equipment very seriously, but it’s still important to look at the reasons why calibrating a PAT tester is so important.

Well the simple reason calibration is so important is because without it a PAT tester can drift from the manufacturers specifications.

This essentially means that the basis for pass and fail may alter over time. This then leads to false test readings, which in itself can be a dangerous consequence.

What’s important is whether you are confident in the results you are getting. Through having your PAT tester calibrated, you can be sure that it is performing accurately.

If you choose to ignore calibration time and just carry on, how can you be absolutely sure that the appliances you are passing are actually safe, how do you know that the readings you are getting are accurate?

Well the answer is, you don’t. And this is the risk you take choosing not to calibrate equipment.

So, when looking at the consequences of not calibrating equipment, these are all possibilities:

  1. Test readings are inaccurate
  2. These inaccurate test readings distort your results and whether you pass or fail an item
  3. If an item you passed causes a shock of fire, you then have to prove this wasn’t the fault of your equipment
  4. With a calibration you could easily prove that your equipment is sound and when you tested the appliance it was in perfect working order.

At the end of the day we at PATorganiser agree it is worth calibrating your PAT tester and we have a great way of managing these test dates from within our PATorganiser Calender function.

Thank you,

The PATorganiser support team.
